Anna Sarneso
English major Anna Sarneso always has had a great appreciation for books.
While
studying abroad at the Herstmonceux Castle in England, Anna developed a
fascination for Virginia Woolf’s complex novels and even visited
“Monk’s House,” the author’s country home. Upon her return last
spring, Anna was encouraged by her faculty mentor, Dr. Kimberly Adams,
to use Woolf’s novels as a starting point for her own thesis. For her
honors in the discipline project, Anna used feminist theories –
primarily Judith Butler’s theory of gender performance – to analyze
gender roles in three of Woolf’s novels, including “Orlando,” Woolf’s
semi-biographical work based in part on the life of her intimate
friend, Vita Sackville-West.
