Gather Information About
Potential Careers
It is
an excellent idea to talk to people about their careers, and
even to observe them at work if possible. Chances are, however,
that your circle of acquaintances does not represent every
career you might want to explore. Counseling Services has
resources that can help you broaden your search:
- Visit
the Counseling Services lending library in BSC 216.
(No appointment
needed) A convenient starting point for your research is
the annually updated
Occupational Outlook
Handbook which
has
practical information on most jobs, including descriptions,
required training, typical
salaries, projected demand, and addresses of professional
organizations. It is available both in our office and online.
- Use
O*Net,
the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information
Network,
to
get information on almost any occupation. You can search
for occupations that use your
skills, and get lists of related occupations you may not
have thought about.
