Suggested Graduate School Application Timeline

Application deadlines vary greatly. They can be as early as August BEFORE your senior year (common for medical schools) or as late as spring/summer of your senior year for programs with rolling admissions. Most deadlines are USUALLY between January and March for fall admission. ALWAYS meet formal deadlines and REMEMBER, many schools encourage and act upon early applications.

Fall / Spring, Junior Year

  1. Research areas of interest, institutions and programs.
  2. Talk to advisors, professors and counselors about interests and application requirements.
  3. Register and prepare for appropriate graduate admission tests.
  4. Investigate national scholarships.
  5. Consult with Career Services to explore options and utilize available resources.

Summer

  1. Take required admission tests.
  2. Write for application materials, note deadlines!
  3. Visit institutions of interest, if possible.
  4. Write your application essay.
  5. For medical or law school, you may need to register for the national application or data assembly service most programs use.
  6. Register for fall admission tests if not satisfied with current scores.

Fall, Senior Year

  1. Obtain letters of recommendation.
  2. Complete and mail applications.
  3. Attend the Graduate/Professional Schools Fair on campus and other forums relating to graduate study.
  4. Develop your resume to apply for graduate assistant positions available.
  5. Apply for financial aid and/or student loans.
  6. Take appropriate admission tests.

 

Winter / Spring, Senior Year

  1. Check (before the deadline) to see if your file is complete.
  2. Visit institutions that accept you and send deposit to the school of your choice.
  3. Notify other schools of your choice so they may admit others from their waiting list.
  4. Send thank you notes to those who wrote your recommendations and notify them of your success.
