National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice

Elizabethtown College Results, 2005

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has been administered annually since 2000 to First Year and Senior students at participating institutions of higher education. Elizabethtown College participated in 2002 and again in 2005. National data are based on the responses of approximately 245,000 students at 529 four-year colleges and universities.

Participating institutions tend to be most interested in their benchmark scores, indicating the extent to which they have engaged their students in five areas known to be related to desireable educational outcomes. The following graphs show Elizabethtown College's scores in comparison to those of other participating baccalaureate-general institutions, as well to the standards set by the top 50% and top 10% of all participating institutions. For each benchmark, you can click "Item-by-Item Results" to further review relative strengths and weaknesses.

Graph: Level of Acacemic Challenge

Our first-year students reported academic challenges exceeding the baccalaureate general norm, and comparable to the mean of the top 50% group.

Seniors reported a challenge level comparable to the baccalaureate general norm, and less than the upper groups.

Graph: Active and Collaborative Learning

Our first year students and our seniors compare well to the standard set by schools in the upper 50%. As at other schools, our seniors report more active and collaborative learning than our first year students.
Graph: Student-Faculty Interactions

Our seniors reported a level of student-faculty interaction noticeably above the baccalaureate general norm. No such pattern was evident for our first year students.
Graph: Enriching Educational Experiences

The overall pattern resembles the one for "Student-Faculty Interactions", above. Seniors, as might be expected, report more such experiences than first year students do.
Graph: Supportive Campus Environment

The data help reinforce our self-image as a caring community, but raise interesting questions about what happens between our students' first and fourth years.
