Citing Electronic Sources - APA Style


General guidelines

Your entries should be double spaced within and between citations. Put them in alphabetical order by author's last name, or if no author is listed, lead off with the title. Use hanging indents. The following are sample entries for some common kinds of electronic sources.

Journal, Periodical, or Newspaper article from a proprietary database such as EBSCOhost or FirstSearch:

Author/editor. (Date). Title of article. Periodical title, volume (issue number), pages.

    Retrieved month, day, year, from name of service or internet address (URL).

Holden, C. (1999, April 23). Possible Ainu site creates buzz. Science, 284 (5414), 583.

    Retrieved August 24, 2005, from Academic Search Premier database.

Baker, P. & Glasser, S.B. (2004, August 25). Russia investigates cause of 2 plane crashes.

    The Washington Post. Retrieved August 25, 2005, from

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/Articles/A31159-2004Aug25.html

Web Site (Personal, Scholarly Project or Professional)

Author. (Date). Title of document. Retrieved month, day, year, from name of sponsoring

    organization. Follow this with a colon and the URL

Kolodge, C. (1993). Amish farming: modern day paradox. Retrieved August 24, 2005, from

    the University of California Small Farm Web Site:

Electronic Journal, Newsletter, or Conference

Author. (Date). Title of article. Title of complete work, volume number (issue). Retrieved

    month, day, year, from URL

Goddard, R.K. McLean, C. & Iossifidis, A. (2004). Macrodactyle: an unusual cause of

    carpel tunnel syndrome. Calicut Medical Journal, 2(3). Retrieved August 25, 2005,

Encyclopedia article

Note: If no author is listed, then place the title in the author position.

Electronic book or pamphlet

Author/editor.. (Date). Title. Place: Publisher. Retrieved month, day, year, from URL

Melville, H. (1957). Moby Dick or the white whale. New York: Viking Press. Retrieved

    August 25, 2005, from http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public.Mel2Mob.html

Posting to a discussion list

Author. (Date). Title [message number]. Message posted to URL
