Use encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks to familiarize yourself with the terminology in the discipline and to get background information. Our reference collection has little specifically on Africa, Asia and pre-columbian American art. However these encyclopedias are a good place to start.

Humanities International Complete. 1925+. Find articles covering literature, philosophy, the arts, history, and culture.
JSTOR I, III, and IV This database has the full text of journals from volume one until the past 3 to 5 years. The Arts & Sciences I collection
contains 119 titles in the humanities and social sciences; Arts and Sciences III contains 150 titles in language and literature, music, film studies,
folklore, performing arts, religion, and the history and study of art and architecture.
Find ImagesArtSTOR This database of 500,000 images covering art, architecture and archeology allows you to find images of almost any kind. You can
enlarge and zoom in on an image. You can save images to a file for later use.Google Images All the power of Google can be harnessed to retrieve an amazing variety and number of images.
Art History Resources on the Web A very comprehensive site covering all time periods and including examples of all artists' works.
Art Museum Network Links to 200 museums and a newsletter
Artlex Art Dictionary. Art-related definitions with examples, illustrations and links-- a very visual dictionary!
Timeline of Art History A complete history of art with links to each time period with examples. There is even some audio. You can here a Mozart sonata played on a 1693 Stradivarius violin or see a Chinese silver dish from the Tang dynasty!
National Museum of African Art This is a part of the Smithsonian museums, with collections of costumes, masks, sculpture, furnishings and much more.
Pre-Columbian Art and History A web site with a section devoted to links to may sites focusing on Aztec, Olmec, Mayan, Incan and other early art.
Princeton University Art Museum This museum site has a nice section on pre-columbian art.
