Finding Articles in EBSCO Databases

What it is/What's in it

EBSCOhost is a group of databases that index and provide full text for thousands of journal articles.  Some Ebsco databases, such as Academic Search Premier, cover all subjects; other Ebsco databases, such as Health Source or Regional Business News, have a specialized subject focus.

TIPS:

·         To retrieve scholarly articles, limit your search to peer-reviewed.

·         If you need an article immediately, limit your search to Full Text articles or articles held at Elizabethtown.

·         Click on “Request on Interlibrary Loan” if the article is not available and you would like to request it from another library.

·         Rather than using the Default Fields search, use the pull-down index to select a more focused way of searching, such as People or Subject Terms.

·         When using the pull-down People or Author index, put the last name first, separated from the first name by a comma, i.e., Tyson, Mike.

·         Use the pull-down Subject Terms index to find articles about a topic, rather than articles that only contain the topic words.  Subject searching is more focused searching.

·         If you are having difficulty selecting appropriate search terms, click on the green Subject Terms button:

o   Type possible terms in the Browse For box.

o   Click on relevancy ranked and click on Browse

o   Put a check mark in front of the term you want.

o   Click on Add

o   The selected terms will be transferred to the Find box, click on Search.

·         To search a word with a variety of endings, add an *

brother* --  retrieves brothers, brotherly, brotherliness, brotherhood, etc

·         Within a citation, click on words highlighted in blue for links to other articles by the same author, about the same subject, in the same journal, etc.

·         To find what articles have cited a particular author, article, or journal, click on the green Cited References button and fill in the appropriate information.

·         To retain copies of your Ebsco searches for later reference, click on Sign In to My Ebscohost and create your own individual Ebsco login.
