There are two general education resources, ERIC and Education Abstracts. Academic Search Premier is a general database that covers the fields of education, psychology and sociology well.

Education Abstracts (via FirstSearch) References to articles from 1983+. Summaries of articles from 1994+.

ERIC 1966+ (through EBSCOhost)
There are 2 parts to ERIC:
• ERIC Documents can be identified by ED numbers. Some documents are available full-text within ERIC. They are also available from October 2002+  at the GPO Access Web site. ERIC documents have not been peer-reviewed.
• ERIC journal articles have EJ numbers. Some are linked within ERIC; for others, check our Locate E-town Journals list.
Tip: If you get a lot of results, limit your search to
Journal Articles in the "Journal or Document" box.

Academic Search Premier (through EBSCOhost)
This multi-disciplinary database indexes over 8100 journals and provides full text for 4700 journals.

For social and psychological aspects of education issues:
PsycArticles (via EBSCOhost) 1985+  Full text of 41 psychology journals. For maximum results, start by searching PsycINFO, below, which covers 1887 to the present.

Social Sciences Abstracts  (via FirstSearch) Find references to articles from 1983+. Get summaries from1994+.

For historical aspects of any topic:

Begin at the beginning: ERIC

ERIC, the Educational Resources Information Center, is a free reference service from the U.S. Department of Education. Find the free version of ERIC here.

The Educator's Reference Desk hosted by the Information Institute at Syracuse University, is another good starting point, and includes lesson plans and resource guides.

The folks at ERIC used to produce ERIC Digests, short reports on topics of current interest to educators that provide broad overviews and references to more detailed information. This work has been continued by private individuals and made available at this site.

The full text of Eric Documents is available online from October 2002+ at the GPO Access Web site.

ED Pubs is your source for free publications from the Department of Education. You will see an "order" form, but the items are free and often available online.

Bilingual Education/ESL

The Center for Applied Linguistics hosts former ERIC Clearinghouse materials, including an Online Directory of ESL Resources, plus many other resources.

National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) "Portraits of Success" A joint project of NABE, Boston College, and the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University, caps a national effort, supported by experts, to develop a database on successful bilingual education.

National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition and Language Instruction Educational Programs NCELA (formerly NCBE, the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education) is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement & Academic Achievement for Limited English Proficient Students and operated by George Washington University. ALPS: Active Learning Practices for Schools An on-line collaborative between teachers and administrators from around the world with educational researchers, professors, and curriculum designers at Harvard's Graduate School of Education and Project Zero. Find downloadable curriculum design tools, model lessons, projects and activities.

Awesome Library 15,000 carefully reviewed and rated resources, including the top 5 percent in education. A "filtered" site that preserves quality.

BlueWeb 'N A searchable, browsable database of annotated and rated K-12 sites. Great for active lessons, activities, projects. Sign up to get e-mail updates.

Discovery Education Homework Help  The Discovery Channel  hosts this helpful list of personally-reviewed sites for students. Choose a subject from the tabs at the top.

Education Development Center, Inc. Founded by MIT scientists, the EDC support 325 projects around the globe, with resources for math, science, urban schools, literacy, early childhood education, etc.

Education World, The Educator's Complete Resource Guide to the Internet Lesson plans, gateway to educational sites, from editors of Education World.

Federal Resources for Education Excellence (FREE) More than 30 Federal agencies make hundreds of federally supported education resources available to teachers and students.

Gateway to 21st Century Skills (aka Gateway to Educational Materials) One-stop access to high quality lesson plans, curriculum units and other education resources, and support for PRAXIS exams.

Global SchoolNet Focuses on collaborative learning, provides online opportunities for teachers to collaborate, communicate, and celebrate shared learning experiences.

Kennedy Center/ArtsEdge Curricula, lessons, and activities for integrating the arts into classroom teaching in all subjects.

LETSNet, the Learning Exchange for Teachers and Students Lesson plans organized by subject with links to Internet resources, developed by faculty and students from Michigan State and Ameritech.

New York Times Learning Network Connections for students, teachers and parents, with emphasis on using the Times as a learning tool. Includes a daily lesson plan and education news.

No Child Left Behind official government Web site.

PBS TeacherSource Over 1400 lesson plans and activities, including web-based lesson ideas, from the Public Broadcasting Service and its affiliates.

TeacherServe An interactive curriculum service for high school English and History teachers, provided by the National Humanities Center.

Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute Lesson plans and curriculum units generated by participants in Yale University-sponsored workshops since 1978. A collection with great depth.

Educational Policy

Clearinghouse on Educational Policy and Management (CEPM, formerly ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management), operated by the College of Education, University of Oregon. Explore "hot topics," such as class size, charter schools, vouchers, and school reform. Full-text "Research Roundups" and "Policy Reports" are also available.

Institute for Educational Policy Studies George Washington University hosts this site, which sponsors research and policy analysis and includes the Institute for Equity and Excellence in Education, the Institute for Curriculum, Standards and Technology, and the Institute for the Study of Language and Education.

Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement  Includes a School Reform and Improvement database.

NCES K-12 Practitioners' Circle Statistics for parents, teachers, administrators, policymakers, librarians.

Regional Educational Laboratories (REL) Program Gateway to 10 RELs who work to ensure that those involved in educational improvement at the local, state, and regional levels have access to the best available information from research and practice. Each REL specializes in an area, such as assessment, language and cultural diversity, etc.

Job Resources

Academic Employment Network Click "Job Listings" for free listings. Under "Resources," find certification requirements, school district profiles, and cost of living comparisons for most states.

Developing Educational Standards  A link to each state's department of ed, plus relevant standards.

National Association of Independent Schools List of online job centers, including Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, independent school associations, and placement agencies.

National Public School Locator The National Center for Educational Statistics offers this locator, as well as one for private schools. Data is generally 2-3 years behind current year.

PA-Educator.net  Promises one-stop shopping for job-seekers; created by a consortium of schools, intermediate units, colleges and universities, and other organizations in PA.

TopSchoolJobs.Org From the national news weekly, Education Week.

News

Education Week The major K-12 education news weekly. In addition to a digest version of the current issue of EW, the site offers a searchable archive (1989+), the monthly publication Teacher Magazine, special reports and job listings.

Harvard Education Letter Research Online A bimonthly newsletter that covers timely topics in depth, from the perspective of both research and practice.

New York Times: Education Free access (with free registration) to recent articles on education topics.

Pennsylvania-Specific Resources

Pennsylvania Department of Education  The authority for the commonwealth.

Pennsylvania Department of Ed Academic Achievement Report  NCLB data and former "report cards" for each school, from the PA Dept of Ed.
