Homecoming 1998

-- October 17, 1998

This was the best, absolutely best, Homecoming for Physics/ Engineering.

    Phys/engrg alumni attending were:

  • Phil Karras '73 Phy-- has been in eight jobs since graduating
DF "How much of what you did at those eight jobs did you learn at EC?"
PK "None of it. But what I learned at EC was how to solve problems and that's all I have been doing in those jobs. If you want a job with projects that last forever, work in Physics for the government. If you want fast paced and continually changing challenges, work in engineering."
DF "That response is a strong affirmation of our program in that there is no way that any educational program can precisely prepare a graduate for every circumstance that might be encountered. The fact that Phil handled all of these various tasks successfully is good news for students and alumni alike."
  • Bruce Ryder '75 Phy-- (MSEE/Cmp E, 1978) has been with Hewlett-Packard since 1978. Bruce is Mayor of Strasburg PA. Bruce will host an EXTERN student next March
  • Tim Wallis '90/'90 3-2 MET-- in third job, now working in Pittstown PA
  • Eric Bolton '95 Cmp E-- MSCP, MSCSE; moving to Alabama and getting married in November
  • Troy Heagy '95/'96 3-2 EE-- Lockheed-Martin, Navy satellite launches. Just got a promotion.
  • Greg Phelan '95/'96 3-2 ME -- Beck Engrg, Newtown PA
  • Leif Bergman '96 Cmp Sci major, Phy minor
  • Jonathan (and Stephanie) Everett '98 Phy (2d Ed) -- Jon commented that many jobs are available in secondary ed. teaching.
  • Mark (and Dawn) Yingling '97/'98 3-2 Ind E -- Hershey Foods. Loving it. Married Dawn two weeks ago; they're still happily married.
  • Ada Ma '98 Engrg Phy -- One year position in College Life at Geneseo State U. Is applying to U. Md for grad school in astronomy. Send her other leads for schools with graduate astronomy.
  • Dave Randall '98 Cmp E-- doing software for automated watershed quality.
  • Josh Luey '98/'99 3-2 Ind E -- Has already received job offer from GE for May 99. Elected to Ind E honorary society.
  • Tom Sofield '98/'99 3-2 Chem E -- working hard, doing well, has already had many interviews. Elected to Ch E honorary society.
  • Tony Masimore '98/'99 3-2 Cmp ET -- doing well, one day per week internship.
  • Phillip Speer (December) '98/'99 3-2 MET -- enjoying PSU/H at the top of his class.
  • Oscar Shutt '99/'00 3-2 Ind E -- So far, very close to straight "A" in all classes.
Although not attending, Joe Hnat III '95 sent a letter regarding his experience at Elizabethtown College:
"My experience at E-town provided a great baseline for my present engineering career. It provided a good engineering foundation, increased my communication skills, and opened many opportunities for extracurricular activities...Because of this baseline, it has helped my present situation. I am currently working as an Industrial Engineer at Rockwell Collins..."
Troy Heagy '96 (employed at Lockheed Martin) also sent comments about his college experience in the 3-2 Engineering Program:
"I believe that my time at Elizabethtown and Penn State well-prepared me for the work environment. Elizabethtown's well-rounded curriculum honed my communications and writing skills and provided the close professorial friendships necessary to survive my early college years, and Penn State prepared me for the demanding, fast-paced environment of today's technology-oriented economy."

Other "friends" of the department with whom we had conversations: Steve Camilli (now working as an actuary in Buenos Aires, Argentina), Wendy Marsh (MS, Physics) Teaching Secondary Ed. Avondale PA, Dave Eikenberry (already in surgery residencies, Temple), Susan DeHaan (teaching 8th grade science in Medford NJ).

Faculty hosts: David Ferruzza; Nat Hager; John and Henrietta Ranck (came toward the end of our time)

Students: Amy Ma, Matt Lowe, Steve Werner
