ETOWN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MORAVIAN IN MAC COMMONWEALTH LEAGUE OPENER; WEIGLE TOSSES COMPLETE GAME

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Scott Weigle (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) tossed a three-hit complete game to help Elizabethtown split a doubleheader with Moravian in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday.  The Blue Jays won game one, 3-1, before falling to the Greyhounds in the nightcap, 4-3.

Weigle lowered his ERA to 0.50 with his team-leading third win of the season for Etown (9-3, 1-1) and added an RBI single in the opener, the Blue Jays first home game of the 1999 campaign.  Chris Romig (Beavertown, Pa./West Snyder) and Buddy Touchinsky (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) each had an RBI sacrifice fly in the win.

In game two, Moravian's Jarrett Hughes broke a 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and Shawn Brown followed with an RBI single to add a key insurance run.  Mark Slavin went the distance, allowing only two hits while fanning three to pick up his first win of the season for the Greyhounds (4-5-1, 1-1).

Hughes drove in Moravian's lone run of the first game with a double in the first inning that plated Michael Abbate to make it 1-0.

Etown answered in their half of the frame when Tim Downing (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) doubled, Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) reached on a throwing error and Weigle lashed a single to score Downing to tie the game at 1-1.

After Nolan Cassell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) moved Weigle to second and Turtell to third with a sacrifice bunt, Romig lofted a fly ball to center that plated Turtell and gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 edge.

Etown posted an insurance run in the sixth inning when Romig led off with his team-leading seventh double of the season and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kiah Sheppard.  Touchinsky's foul out down the left field line was deep enough to score Romig and give Etown a 3-1 lead.

Both teams combined for only 15 hits over 14 innings on the afternoon.  Hughes went 3-for-6 for the Greyhounds.

The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, March 23 at home against Marywood College.  Game time is 3 p.m.
