BOYERTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell in the opening game of the 2001 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament, 9-3, to Montclair State, Thursday at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa. With the loss, the Blue Jays (18-18), will face the loser of Thursday's Johns Hopkins-Western New England game at 11:00 a.m. Friday. The winner of Friday's game will continue to play on Saturday, while the loser of that game will be eliminated.
Elizabethtown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) was driven in by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Comp reached base on an error to lead off the inning, and he moved to third when Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) singled.
Montclair State (32-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Scott Allan (Milford, NJ/Immaculata) doubled home Brian Ellerson (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic), who singled and stole second to move into scoring position.
The Red Hawks added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Dave Wurst (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) singled and was driven home on a triple by Craig Conway (Mountainside, NJ/Gov. Livingston), who also scored on the play due to an Elizabethtown throwing error.
Elizabethtown struck back to tie the score in the top of the sixth inning, as Comp drove in Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) on a double. A throwing error by Montclair sent Comp to third, and a sacrifice fly by Turtell subsequently drove him in.
The Blue Jays missed an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) doubled to lead off the inning and chase Montclair starting pitcher Jeff Gogal (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) from the game. A single by Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) sent Duppstadt to third with one out, and Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) followed with a walk to load the bases. However, the Blue Jays grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Montclair State pulled ahead to stay in the bottom of the seventh inning as Wurst hit a two-run homer. Chris Baran (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) followed with another home run on the next pitch to remove Etown starter Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) from the game. Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) took over on the mound for Etown and held the Red Hawks scoreless for the rest of the inning.
The Red Hawks added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Wurst hit a two-RBI triple and scored on a single by Baran.
Montclair State reliever Kevin Rakowski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) got the win, and Jason Arre (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) was credited with a save since he entered the game when the Red Hawks had a three run lead. Starter Gogal fanned nine Blue Jays in six innings pitched.
