BOYERTOWN, Pa. --- Sixth-seeded Elizabethtown stayed alive in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament by defeating fifth-seeded Western New England, 11-4, at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA. With the win, Elizabethtown improves to 19-18 overall and eliminates Western New England, which finishes the season with a 21-15 record and a 0-2 mark in the double elimination tournament. Elizabethtown will play again at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, against an opponent to be determined.
Western New England starting pitcher Nick Ziminsky (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) never made it out of the top of the first inning, as the Blue Jays erupted for seven runs in the opening frame. Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) led off the game with a single and was driven in on a two-run homer by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst). Jared Ness (York, PA/McPherson, KS) followed Turtell's blast with a single. Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) walked and Brad Biehl (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg) was hit by an errant pitch to load the bases with one out. Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) followed with a two-RBI single, and Kenny Glass (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) walked immediately afterward to load the bases once again. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) then hit a two-RBI single. In his second time up in the first inning, Comp grounded out but drove in Glass for the seventh run of the inning.
Western New England scored a run in the bottom of the first when Jason Engelhart (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro Central) drove in Jon Whelpley (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk) with a double.
Etown added another run in the top of the second, when Turtell led off with a double and was driven in on a single by Duppstadt.
Western New England made the score 8-3 in the bottom of the third when Engelhart doubled home Derek Higgins (Waltham, MA/Waltham), and a sacrifice fly by Joe Farina (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) drove in Engelhart.
Etown extended its lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth when Biehl hit a double to drive in Ness, who reached base on a single.
The Blue Jays pulled ahead 11-3 in the top of the sixth Duppstadt hit a two-run home run, scoring Turtell.
Zach Holt (Northampton, MA/Northampton) scored Western New England's final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Duppstadt led the Blue Jays with three RBI, and he batted three for four with a home run. Turtell scored a team-high three runs, and went two for five with a home run and two RBI.
Etown starting pitcher Eric Lau (Dillsburg, PA/Northern) pitched six innings to improve to 9-2 this season. Western Maryland's Engelhart hit four for four in the game with two RBI and one run scored.
