ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE BASEBALL Elizabethtown Improves to 8-2 Overall and 2-0 in Conference with Doubleheader Sweep of Albright ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With a pair of wins at home Sunday over Albright, Elizabethtown improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Blue Jays took the first game, 3-1, in eight innings and won the second game, 2-1. Albright, which returned yesterday from its spring break trip to Florida, dropped to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the loss. Etown was aided by a pair strong pitching performances by Drew Kelley (York, PA/Dallastown) and Mike Nocar (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterton). Kelley started and completed the first game, allowing three hits and one walk in eight innings while striking out four to get his first win of the season. Nocar started and went the full seven innings of the second game, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six to improve to 2-0 in 2003. Etown went up 1-0 in the second inning of the first game when Seth Guida (Reading, PA/Exeter), who went two-for-two with a double in the first game, scored on a wild pitch. Albright tied the score 1-1 in the top of the fifth when Michael Tinney (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) singled home Justin Holland (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin). As the seventh inning passed without any further scoring and Albright was retired in the top of the eighth as extra innings began, Brad Duppstadt (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) singled with one out for Etown in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Luongo (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) crushed a two-run homer over the left field fence in the next at bat to win the game. It was his only hit of the day. In the second game, Eric Wetzel (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) walked and scored in the first and third innings after being driven in by Guida both times to give Etown a 2-0 lead. Albright scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning when David Ciccone, Jr. (Drexel Hill, PA/Monsignor Bonner) hit a solo home run. Elizabethtown will return to action at home Monday, March 24 in a 3:00 p.m. conference nine-inning game against Lebanon Valley. |
