ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY

ETOWN DROPS 1-0 HEARTBREAKER TO NO. 1 MESSIAH

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Marcia Ginder scored on a penalty stroke with 2:30 left in regulation to give top-ranked Messiah a 1-0 win over Elizabethtown in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday.  With the loss the Blue Jays dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Commonwealth League.

Beth Purcell, Mandi Ewing and Denise Heller led Etown with three shots apiece.  Kate VanValkenburgh stood tall in the Blue Jay cage, making a season-high 18 saves to keep the contest scoreless until the final three minutes.

Messiah, which entered the game ranked No. 1 in Division III, outshot the Jays 25-12 for the game and also held a 13-3 edge in penalty corners, including nine in the second half.  Erica Abrams, Kate Oostdyk and Allison Harris led the Falcons with five shots apiece.

Etown returns to action on Tuesday, September 22 at Franklin and Marshall College.  Game time is 4 p.m.
