ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY
ETOWN DROPS CLOSE GAME TO D-II POWER SHIPPENSBURG, 2-1 SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. --- The Blue Jays faced a case of David-and-Goliath Saturday, as they squared off on the road against Shippensburgs strong Division II program. In the end, Shippensburg (11-2) came out on top, but only with a paltry 2-1 victory. Playing key roles in Elizabethtowns strong showing included goaltender Kate VanValkenburgh (Malvern, PA/Great Valley), who made a season-high 23 saves against the Lady Raiders, and freshman forward Stacy Peters (Millville PA/Central Columbia), who scored Etowns only goal unassisted and led the team with three shots on goal. Shippensburgs Jeanette Keiser scored first at 19:39 in the first half. Peters responded with her goal at 3:27. Just before the end of the half, Anne Furman scored for Shippensburg. The second half was a purely defensive struggle and was especially frustrating for the Lady Raiders, who fired off 18 shots but could not get anything past VanValkenburgh. Etown (6-7) returns to action on the road against Dickinson Monday, October 11. Game time is 4:00 p.m. at Shippensburg, Pa.
First Half: Shots on Goal: EC 5, SU 33. Corners: EC 4, SU 19. Goalie Saves: Kate VanValkenburgh (EC) 23, Audra Schanafelt (SU) 5. |
