ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown made its first home game on its Sofsport all-weather field a memorable one, defeating Commonwealth Conference rival Messiah 2-1 in overtime.
It was Etown's first victory against Messiah since 1991, and the 990th win of head coach Yvonne Kauffman's combined field hockey, basketball and tennis coaching career.
After a scoreless first period, Messiah broke the stalemate with when Alison Harris scored on an assist from Jess Brandt with 21:37 remaining in the second half.
Etown forward Beth Purcell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) tied the game with a goal with 19:31 remaining in regulation time on an assist from Barb Wirtz (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove).
Etown won the game when Mandi Ewing (McClure, PA/West Snyder) scored on a penalty shot 8:11 into overtime.
Elizabethtown (2-1 overall, 1-1 Commonwealth) returns to action at home Saturday, September 16 against Bridgewater. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
