ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown hosted Widener Thursday and defeated the Pioneers 5-1 to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the Commonwealth Conference. The win was also the 995th of Etown head coach Yvonne Kauffman's collegiate coaching career.
Etown's first goal was scored with 12:47 remaining in the first half by Beth Purcell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) unassisted. The Blue Jays ended the first stanza with a 2-0 lead after Mandi Ewing (McClure, PA/West Snyder) scored an unassisted goal with 4:11 remaining in the period.
The Blue Jays ended the game with a scoring barrage in the final 11 minutes. Mindy Nace (Thompsontown, PA/East Juniata) scored twice on assists from Brandy Espenshade (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) and Ewing, who moved into sole possession of ninth place on Etown's career point scoring list. Lisa Zybszinski (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) scored the Blue Jays' final goal and the first of her collegiate career with 4:25 remaining on an assist from Nace.
Widener (3-6, 0-3) averted a shutout with 1:39 left in the game when Eileen Boltz (Glen Mills, PA/Ursuline Academy) scored on an assist from Kristin
Hanson (Limerick, PA/Spring Ford).
Etown returns to action on the road against Goucher Saturday, September 30. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
