ELIZABETHTOWN HEAD COACH YVONNE KAUFFMAN REACHES 1,000 CAREER WIN MARK AS FIELD HOCKEY TEAM DEFEATS YORK, 3-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA --- Yvonne Kauffman, head coach of the field hockey and women's basketball programs at Elizabethtown College and one of the most successful coaches of women's sports in NCAA Division III history, reached the greatest milestone of her career Monday when the field hockey team defeated nationally eighth-ranked York College 3-0. With the win, Kauffman attained the 1,000th victory of her collegiate coaching career combined between field hockey, women's basketball and women's tennis.

Elizabethtown, ranked 16th in the nation according to the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, entered the game with an 11-2 overall record, but came in as the underdog against York, ranked eighth in the nation with a 10-1 mark before the game.

Etown got on the board early as Beth Purcell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) scored only 1:32 into the game on an assist from Pam Pike (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen). From there, the game settled into a stalemate for the rest of the half, and the Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Mandi Ewing (McClure, PA/West Snyder) scored the Blue Jays' second goal with 23:16 left in the second half on an assist from Kate Gwilliam (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown). Ewing added an insurance goal on a penalty shot with 13:09 remaining in the game to send Etown ahead, 3-0.

Elizabethtown controlled the pace throughout much of the game and out shot the Spartans 21-11. The Blue Jays also had 16 penalty corners to York's four. Etown goaltender Kate VanValkenburgh (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) made seven saves for her seventh shutout of the season, and York goalkeeper Heidi Duthoy (Frederick, MD/Frederick) made 14 saves for the Spartans.

With the win, Elizabethtown improves to 12-2 overall while York falls to 10-2. At the conclusion of the game, Kauffman was presented with the game ball and flowers by co-captains Ewing and M.E. Regan (Andover, NJ/Newton).

Kauffman began coaching field hockey at Elizabethtown in 1967, and through today has a 343-172-36 record in hockey over 33 seasons. She has guided Etown to seven NCAA Division III field hockey tournament appearances. She has coached seven field hockey All-Americans. She earned her first win on October 5, 1967, a 3-0 victory over Messiah.

Kauffman began coaching both women's tennis and women's basketball at Etown in 1970. As a basketball coach, she captured NCAA Division III national championships in 1982 and 1989 and has led her teams to 12 NCAA tournament appearances and seven Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.

She is second among active Division III women's basketball coaches in victories with a record of 549 wins and 172 losses in 30 seasons. She has coached seven All-Americans and two National Players of the Year. Through the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season, Elizabethtown remained the winningest women's basketball program in the entire NCAA.

As a women's tennis coach from 1970 to 1983, Kauffman led her teams to four undefeated seasons and a total record of 108 wins and 24 losses. She coached two All-Americans in tennis.

Elizabethtown returns to action at home against Division II Shippensburg Thursday, October 12. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
