Potosky Scores Lone Goal and Marquette Makes 16 Saves as Etown Upsets Fourth-Ranked Messiah, 1-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- In a game that could seriously impact next week's national rankings and throw a monkey wrench into the Commonwealth Conference playoff picture over the next month, unranked Elizabethtown defeated conference rival Messiah, 1-0, in a stunning upset at home Tuesday.

Messiah, which entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in NCAA Division III with a 6-2 overall record, had lost only to Rowan, currently ranked second in Division III, and Bloomsburg, currently ranked first in the nation in Division II, this season. Messiah dropped to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference with the loss, while Elizabethtown improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth.

Elizabethtown got its only goal courtesy of senior forward Lauren Potosky (Wrightsville, PA/Eastern York) just 12 minutes into the game. From then on, the contest turned into a war of attrition as Messiah fired off shot after shot at the Blue Jays' goal, and as Elizabethtown missed several strong opportunities to score again.

Ultimately, Messiah out-shot Elizabethtown 29-8 but found it could not get anything past Etown sophomore goaltender Lisa Marquette (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest), who made sixteen saves and swatted away a Messiah penalty stroke in the middle of the second half. Kate Gwilliam (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) pitched in a defensive save as well for the Blue Jays. Messiah had 11 penalty corners against five for Elizabethtown.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, October 5 against conference rival Albright in an 11:00 a.m. game.
