Etown Finds Its Offense, Blows Out Albright 5-0 to Halt Nine Game Skid

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- After scoring 12 goals in its first ten games of 2003 and just six goals in its last nine games, the Elizabethtown field hockey team regained its offensive touch and blew out Commonwealth Conference rival Albright 5-0 at home Saturday. Etown snaps a nine-game losing streak with the win and improves to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while Albright drops to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the Commonwealth.

Lauren Potosky (Wrightsville, PA/Eastern York) put Etown on the scoreboard just 3:31 into the game with her first goal of the season. Much of the first half was frustrating for Etown, as the Blue Jays fired off 14 shots in the half and only scored once at the beginning of the period and once at the end, as Kelly Miller (Robesonia, PA/Conrad Weiser) scored at 32:58 off an assist from Samantha Stever (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh). Miller would finish the day with two goals and one assist.

Following halftime, Etown shook off what remained of the rust on its attack, scoring three goals on eight shots in the process. Melanie Slessinger (Westminster, MD/North Carroll) scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Mindy Scheler (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) at 47:45. Miller struck again at 52:02 with an unassisted goal. Jen Pechart (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) scored the final goal of the game and the first of her collegiate career off a Miller assist at 63:27.

Defensively, Etown held Albright to just six shots, and Lisa Marquette (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) made three saves in 63 minutes of playing time in the goal to share the shutout with Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy), who played the final seven minutes in the Etown net. Heather Morgan (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) made a defensive save as well for the Blue Jays.

Etown held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners, although the Blue Jays scored only one of their goals off a corner. Albright keeper Kristen Ianieri (Marlton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) made 20 saves for the Lions.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Thursday, October 9 against conference opponent Juniata in a 3:30 p.m. game.
