ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY Etown Drops Commonwealth Opener to Widener 1-0 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the Commonwealth Conference with a 1-0 home loss to Widener Thursday. Widener improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the win. Etown controlled the pace of the game for much of the first half and had seven penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes, but the Blue Jays managed just one shot over the course of the period. Widener, meanwhile, had four penalty corners but just one shot in the first half as well. Widener's offense came alive in the second half as the Pioneers fired off eight shots and had seven penalty corners. Etown had six more penalty corners in the second half, but once again managed just one clear shot on goal. Widener's only goal came with 25:43 left to play in the second half, when Christina Blanco netted a follow-up shot on the rebound of her previous shot that was kicked away by Etown goaltender Lisa Marquette (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest). Marquette made eight saves over the course of the game as Etown was out-shot 9-2, and Widener goaltender Katie Heritage needed to make just two saves to earn the shutout.
