Elizabethtown Defeats Nationally Ranked Kean 2-1 in Overtime; Blue Jays Have Highest Win Total Since 2002

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown upended nationally sixteenth-ranked Kean University in a 2-1 overtime game at home Wednesday afternoon. Etown, which improved to 8-2 overall with the victory, attained its highest win total since 2002 in the win. Kean dropped to 8-2 overall with the loss.

Kean scored its only goal of the game just 1:44 after the opening whistle as, on a penalty corner, Caitlin Slemmer (Glendora, NJ/Triton Regional) nudged a blast by Cherie McNellis (Magnolia, NJ/Triton Regional) from near the top of the circle into the goal.

Etown evened the score 14:09 into the game as first-year student Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) scored off a penalty corner. It was the second consecutive game in which she has scored.

From there, the game remained scoreless through the close of regulation time. Overtime began with both teams attaining some of their best scoring chances of the game. Early in overtime, Kean’s Vicki Egerer (Washington, NJ/ Warren Hills) found herself one-on-one with Etown goalie Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy). Egerer launched three rapid-fire shots at the Etown goal, but all of them were bounced back by Callaghan for three of her four saves in the game.

In front of the Kean net, Cougar goalie Concetta Valerio (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) made four of her seven saves for the game in overtime, and McNellis had an overtime defensive save as well. The stalemate was broken 6:57 into overtime when Brandy Spriggle (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) fired off a shot for Etown that was blocked by Valerio, got the rebound and passed the ball to teammate Mel Slessinger (Westminster, MD/North Carroll), who netted the ball for her team-leading 11 th goal of the season. Slessinger has now scored in four consecutive games for the Blue Jays.

Etown out-shot Kean 14-9 over the course of the game, and both teams totaled 10 penalty corners. Andrea Marsala (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) had a defensive save for Etown.

The Blue Jays will return to action at home Saturday, October 1 against nationally nineteenth-ranked King’s College ( Pa.) in a 1:00 p.m. game.
