#18 Elizabethtown Defeats Widener 2-1 in Commonwealth Conference Game

CHESTER, Pa. --- Nationally 18th-ranked Elizabethtown College improved to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the Commonwealth Conference Thursday night with a 2-1 road win over Widener University. Widener dropped to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference with the loss. The contest was the make-up of a rained out game originally scheduled for October 8. It was the Blue Jays’ first game in eight days.

After a scoreless first half, Etown’s Jen Pechart (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) broke the silence with her first goal of the season on a scramble in front of the Widener net. The goal was assisted by Alli Stanley (Bear, DE/ Caravel Academy) 55:21 into the game. Less than two minutes later, Etown went up 2-0 when Mel Slessinger (Westminster, MD/North Carroll) scored her team-leading 14th goal at 57:08 off an assist by Pechart.

Widener scored its only goal at 62:19 when Missy Pappas scored on a long shot just inside the circle during a penalty corner.

Etown out-shot Widener 19-11 over the course of the game, and the Blue Jays held a 12-7 edge over Widener in penalty corners.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, October 15 against Dickinson College in a noon non-conference game.
