Nationally 15th-Ranked Elizabethtown Knocks Off Nationally Top-Ranked Messiah 2-1 in Overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Nationally fifteenth-ranked Elizabethtown College upset nationally number one-ranked Messiah College with a 2-1 overtime home victory over the Falcons Wednesday evening. The game, a Commonwealth Conference contest, was Messiah’s first loss of the season, dropping the Falcons to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Elizabethtown improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win.

Messiah took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when Nikki Bailey (Elliotsburg, PA/West Perry) scored off a Lisa Strausbaugh (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) assist during a penalty corner at 31:21.

Elizabethtown tied the game early in the second half at 41:44 when Laura Rinck (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season on a penalty stroke. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation time, sending the game into overtime.

Exactly three minutes into overtime, Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Jen Pechart (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic).

Elizabethtown out-shot Messiah 14-11 over the course of the game. Messiah held a 5-2 advantage in shots during the first half, but Etown out-shot the Falcons 10-5 in the second half and 2-1 in overtime. The Falcons held an 8-6 edge in penalty corners over the host Blue Jays.

Etown goaltender Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) made seven saves, while Messiah goalie Ashley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, PA/Northern) made seven saves as well, six of which came in the second half.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, September 30 against Widener University in a 1:00 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.
