Nationally 11th-Ranked Elizabethtown Edges Scranton 2-1 in Double Overtime

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Nationally 11th-ranked Elizabethtown College improved to 13-2 overall with a 2-1 double overtime home win over the University of Scranton Tuesday.

Although Elizabethtown was able to control possession of the ball for most of the game, Scranton, which dropped to 9-4 with the loss, was able to limit Elizabethtown’s time in the circle and the Blue Jays’ number of shots through much of the game, especially during regulation time. Elizabethtown out-shot Scranton 20-2 over the course of the game, but the Blue Jays only out-shot Scranton 5-0 in the first half and 3-2 in the second half. Six of Etown’s shots came in the first 15-minute overtime period, and six more of the Blue Jays’ shots came in the final 10:12-long overtime period.

Elizabethtown got on the scoreboard early, as Andrea Miles (Phoenix, MD/Notre Dame Prep.) scored unassisted just 3:56 after the opening whistle for her sixth goal of the season. From that point, Scranton permitted just six more shots from Etown for the rest of regulation time despite the Blue Jays’ control of the ball. The Royals were able to tie the game with just 59 seconds left in the second half as Karolyn Holody (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) scored on the Royals’ second shot of the game off a Kristy McNevin (Drexel Hill, PA/Country Day-Sacred Heart) assist.

After a scoreless first overtime, Elizabethtown found the back of the net on its sixth shot of the second overtime and 12th overall overtime shot with 4:48 left on the clock. Brandy Spriggle (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder) scored the game-winner off an assist from Brenna Noon (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing).

Scranton goalie Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) made 13 saves, eight of which came during overtime, to keep the Royals in the game. Etown goaltender Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) made one save.

Elizabethtown will return to action as the host of Susquehanna University in a Commonwealth Conference game Thursday, October 19 at 4:30 p.m.
