Elizabethtown Defeats Lynchburg 1-0 in First Round of NCAA Tournament; Blue Jays to Face College of New Jersey on Road Friday ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Nationally 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College, playing in its first NCAA Division III tournament game since 1988, defeated nationally 20th-ranked Lynchburg College 1-0 at home Wednesday afternoon. Lynchburg concludes its 2006 season with an 18-3 overall record, while Elizabethtown improves to 16-5 overall and advances to face The College of New Jersey, currently ranked second in the nation, on the road Friday, November 10 at 11:00 a.m. in the NCAA tournament’s second round. The win was Elizabethtown’s first NCAA Division III tournament victory since 1987. The Blue Jays had competed in each of the first eight NCAA Division III tournaments from 1981 to 1988, but after that the team did not appear again in the NCAA tournament until this season. Wednesday’s victory also gave Elizabethtown its highest single season win total since 1988, when the Blue Jays went 16-4-2. Lynchburg out-shot Elizabethtown 3-2 over the course of the first half, and Elizabethtown held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners before halftime. In the second half, Elizabethtown out-shot Lynchburg 3-2, while Lynchburg held a 3-2 edge in penalty corners. The game’s lone goal came with 30:35 left on the clock in the second half, as senior midfielder Laura Rinck (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) scored her eighth goal of the season off a Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) assist during one of the Blue Jays’ two penalty corners. Elizabethtown senior goaltender Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) made one save to preserve the shutout, her ninth complete-game whitewash of the season and Elizabethtown’s tenth overall. Two Lynchburg senior defenders, Olga Ozarslan (Falls Church, VA/George C. Marshall) and Paige Bennett (Goshen, CT/Wamogo Regional), made one defensive save apiece for the Hornets. at Elizabethtown, Pa.
