Second-Ranked College of New Jersey Defeats Elizabethtown 5-0 in Second Round of NCAA Division III Tournament EWING, N.J --- Nationally second-ranked The College of New Jersey defeated 15th-ranked Elizabethtown College 5-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament at The College of New Jersey Friday. Elizabethtown wraps up its 2006 season with a 16-6 overall record, while TCNJ improves to 17-2 overall with the win and advances to the third round against the winner of today’s Williams College-Messiah College game. The victory was also the 400th of TCNJ head coach Sharon Pfluger’s collegiate coaching career. The College of New Jersey took a 1-0 lead 6:08 into the game as Jess Berkowitz (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored off a Sheri Grodski (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) assist during a penalty corner. TCNJ went up 2-0 by halftime as Berkowitz scored again off a Meg Hess assist during another corner 28:30 into the game. At 42:20, the host Lions improved the score to 3-0 as Jenny Lubin (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored off a Colleen Dougherty (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) feed during another corner. A Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) goal off a Kelly Mitchell (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) assist at 67:40 during a corner gave The College of New Jersey a 4-0 lead. The final goal came just 24 seconds before the end of the game, as Berkowitz completed a hat trick off Grondski’s second assist of the game. TCNJ held a 15-5 advantage in shots over the course of the game, and the Lions held a 13-6 edge in penalty corners over the Blue Jays. Laura Rinck (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove Area) and Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) led Elizabethtown in shots with two each. Elizabethtown goaltender Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) made six saves over the course of the game, and TCNJ goalie Erin Mitschke (Boonton Township, NJ/Mountain Lakes) made two saves. Elizabethtown has completed the 2006 season with a 16-6 overall record, the team’s highest win total since 1988. The Blue Jays competed in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since 1988 this year and their ninth time overall. Elizabethtown was a participant in each of the first eight NCAA Division III field hockey tournaments from 1981 to 1988. On Wednesday, the Blue Jays defeated Lynchburg College 1-0 at home in the first round for Elizabethtown’s first NCAA Division III tournament win since 1987. The College of New Jersey is in the NCAA Division III tournament for the 26th consecutive year, and it is the only program that has competed in every NCAA Division III field hockey tournament since it began in 1981. at Ewing, N.J.
