ETOWN UPENDS 16th RANKED FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL, 71-63

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown, ranked fourth in the Middle Atlantic Region, pulled off a dramatic 71-63 upset of Lancaster County rival Franklin and Marshall, ranked 16th in the nation according to the latest D3hoops.com poll and second in the region, at home Thursday night.

The Blue Jays pulled ahead early and amassed a 24-10 lead over the nationally-ranked Diplomats 14 minutes into the game. Franklin and Marshall began to chip away at Etown's lead in the final five minutes of the first half, and a layup by Marko Stanojevic with four seconds remaining before half time cut the Blue Jays' lead to 32-25.

With 15:01 remaining in the second half, F & M pulled to within four of the Blue Jays for the first time since 4:30 into the game. F & M, however, would never get closer than three in a very evenly matched second half.

A layup by Casimer Thomas with 2:27 remaining to play made the score 61-58 in Etown's favor, and it was the last time F & M would get that close. Ross Unruh (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made a layup for Etown 20 seconds later, and the Blue Jays began to pull away for good.

Elizabethtown, which improves to 11-3 overall with the win, held the lead from the opening score 47 seconds into the game through to the very end. Franklin and Marshall fell to 12-3 overall with the loss.

Leading the Blue Jays in scoring and rebounding was Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Unruh chipped in 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of three pointers while going 5-9 from the field.

Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) scored 12 points, hit two three pointers and led the Blue Jays with three steals. Matt Nikoloff (Grove City, PA/Grove City) also reached double figures for Etown, scoring 12 points as well as going 6-9 from the field.

Duran Searles led F & M with 13 points, and Thomas had a team-high of 10 rebounds.

Etown returns to action as host of Commonwealth Conference foe Juniata Saturday, January 20. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
