ETOWN UPENDS 10th-RANKED WIDENER, 81-71, IN COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE CLASH

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The process of divining the best team in the Middle Atlantic region just became a whole lot murkier. Widener, ranked 10th in the nation according to D3hoops.com and first in the region by the NCAA D-III men's basketball committee, ventured into the home territory of regionally third-ranked Elizabethtown only to become the Blue Jays' 12th home-court victim this season, as Etown won 81-71 Wednesday night.

Elizabethtown, which improves to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in the Commonwealth Conference, rattled off its 16th consecutive victory at home. The Blue Jays have not lost at Thompson Gymnasium since January 29, 2000. The win was also Etown's first over Widener since December 8, 1998.

Despite the loss, Widener retains sole possession of first place in the conference, with an overall record of 17-4 and a Commonwealth mark of 9-2. Elizabethtown remains the lone holder of second place with its 8-3 conference record.

Ross Unruh (Denver, PA/Cocalico) was on fire for the Blue Jays, totaling 28 points and five rebounds while going 3-5 from behind the three-point line, including a pair of threes made from about four feet behind the arc.

Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) pitched in 15 points for Etown, and Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) scored 13 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out six assists for the Blue Jays. Rocky Parise (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) also had six assists for Etown.

Chaz Williamson (Philadelphia, PA/Mastbaum) led Widener with 16 points and nine assists. Frank DeLuca (North Brunswick, NJ/Solebury School) added 15 points and led the Pioneers with 11 rebounds.

Elizabethtown returns to action on the road against conference rival Susquehanna Saturday, February 10 for a 3:00 p.m. game.
