ETOWN FALLS TO WIDENER, 81-74, IN COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP; PARISE BREAKS PROGRAM ASSIST RECORD

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown now must wait to Sunday night to see if it receives one of the precious few NCAA tournament at-large bids following Saturday night's 81-74 road loss to Widener in the championship game of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs.

On a brighter note for Etown, point guard Rocky Parise (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) broke the program's single season assist record. He had seven assists on the night to give him 155 this season, breaking the record of 149 set by Matt Duffy in 1989-90.

Elizabethtown (20-6) fell behind early to Widener, and trailed the Pioneers 19-11 nine and a half minutes into the game. Etown came back and took a 23-21 lead with 7:04 to go in the first half, but Widener regained the lead with 3:00 to go in the half and took a 43-36 lead into halftime.

Etown tied the score at 64 on a three-pointer by Ross Unruh (Denver, PA/Cocalico) with 7:43 left in the game, but Widener broke the stalemate a minute later and never looked back. Widener out-rebounded the Blue Jays 41-27.

Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) led Etown with 20 points and five rebounds, Unruh added 14 points, and Chad Heller (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) came off the bench to score 13 and pull down five boards. Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) was Etown's fourth double-digit scorer with 11 points.

Mike Siuchta led Widener with 20 points.
