Etown Ties Program Season Win Record for Second Consecutive Year With 87-73 Victory Over Moravian, Blue Jays Now 20-2 Overall
BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- With an 87-73 road win over Moravian Tuesday night, Elizabethtown improved to 20-2 overall and 10-1 in the Commonwealth Conference. By reaching the 20-win mark, Etown has also tied its program high-water mark for wins in a season for the second consecutive year. The record was originally set in 1963-64, when the team finished 20-5 and won its first conference championship.
Moravian gave Elizabethtown an early scare by jumping out to a 12-3 lead in the opening four minutes. By 13:27 remaining in the first half, the Greyhounds held a 21-9 advantage. Etown went on a 10 point run over the next five minutes to cut the Moravian lead to 21-19.
Elizabethtown took a lead for the first time at 7:19 before halftime on a three-pointer by point guard Rocky Parise (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) to make the score 26-24 in the Blue Jays' advantage. Etown never relinquished the lead after gaining it, as the Blue Jays carried a 39-36 advantage into halftime. The Blue Jays took a lead as great as 23 points in the second half.
Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and Jon English (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) each led Etown in scoring with 22 points. Porambo also tied with Chad Heller (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Heller and Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) added 13 points each to the Blue Jays' efforts. Rocky Parise finished the game with 13 assists, one short of the program single-game record he set in 2000-01 and tied earlier this season.
Doug Spadt led Moravian with 15 points, Brandon Zaleski added 13 points for the Greyhounds, and Ken Greb scored 12 points. Zaleski led the team with seven rebounds.
Elizabethtown out-rebounded the Greyhounds 42-26, and Etown shot 53.6% (34-for-58) from the field against 44.8% (27-for-66) for Moravian.
Elizabethtown will try to break its program win record on the road Saturday, February 9 against Lebanon Valley. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
