Etown Bulldozes Albright 89-53 in Final Regular Season Game; Blue Jays to Enter Postseason With 23-2 Overall Record
READING, Pa. --- Elizabethtown wrapped up the regular season of its record-breaking 2001-02 campaign by inflicting an 89-53 thrashing upon host Albright to enter the postseason with a 23-2 overall record and a 13-1 record in the Commonwealth Conference. Albright's season ends with a 4-21 overall and 2-12 conference record.
Elizabethtown took a 48-34 lead into halftime, then opened the floodgates in the second half, outscoring Albright 41-19. Etown shot 44.7% (17-for-38) from the floor in the first half and 57.7% (15-for-26) in the second half.
Albright, by contrast shot 50.0% (13-for-26) in the first half, but dropped to 27.6% (8-for-29) in the second half. Etown also out-rebounded the Lions 45-28, and Albright turned the ball over 20 times against 10 turnovers for the Blue Jays. The Lions committed 25 fouls, while the Blue Jays had just 13, creating a 21-5 scoring discrepancy at the free throw line in favor of Etown.
Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) led Etown in scoring with 21 points in just 18 minutes of playing time. He drained all three of his three-point attempts and went seven-for-11 from the field. Jon English (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) led Etown with nine rebounds and scored 18 points.
Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) scored 14 points for Etown, and Chad Heller (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) added 12 Blue Jay points and led the team with four steals.
Corey Rich led Albright with 14 points, and Ian Houck added 11 points from off the bench for the Lions.
Elizabethtown, which finishes first in the conference regular-season standings, will begin the postseason Wednesday, February 20, when the Blue Jays will host fourth-place Susquehanna in the first round of the conference playoffs at 7:30 p.m.
