ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL
Etown Blows Past Haverford, 101-78
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown played its first home game since December 4 Monday night and handily defeated Haverford 101-78 to improve to 6-4 overall. Haverford dropped to 2-6 overall with the loss.
The Blue Jays had to wait a little longer than expected to play, as the game began 45 minutes late due to Haverford's late arrival, caused by a flat tire on the bus ride to Elizabethtown.
Once the game got underway, Elizabethtown got off to a rusty start as the Blue Jays and Haverford traded the lead in the early part of the first half. Etown began to pull away later in the first half, and the Blue Jays led 55-38 by halftime. Etown went up by more than 30 points mid-way through the second half.
Jon English (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Township) led Elizabethtown with 17 points and 17 rebounds on six-for-15 shooting from the field and a five-for-seven performance from the free throw line. Etown's other starters to score in double figures were Chad Heller (New Holland, PA/Garden Spot) with 11 points and Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), who scored 10 points and led the team with six assists and four steals.
Etown's bench came up big in the game, totaling 51 points, just over half of the Blue Jays' total. Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) led the reserves with 14 points, and he sank four out of five three-point attempts. Ben Tannous (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) scored 10 points for Etown, hitting both of his three-point attempts, three of four shots from the field, and both of his free throw attempts.
Matt Stein led Haverford with 16 points and eight rebounds, and John Elefterakis chipped in 15 points for the Fords. Sam Adams scored 11 points, and Jeremy Bass came off the bench to score 10 points for Haverford.
Etown made 87.1% (27-for-31) of its free throws and out-rebounded Haverford 41-27. Haverford also committed 29 turnovers against 22 for Elizabethtown.
Elizabethtown will return to action at home Wednesday, January 8 against Gettysburg in a non-conference game at 8:00 p.m.
1/6/03 7:00 p.m. at Thompson Gymnasium, Elizabethtown, Pa.
