Lebanon Valley Slips Past Etown, 67-61, Ends Blue Jays' Win Streak at Eight
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A late run sparked by the play of J.D. Byers (Westminster, MD/Westminster) enabled Lebanon Valley to win a tight 67-61 contest in a key Commonwealth Conference game at Elizabethtown Saturday. Etown saw its eight-game winning streak snapped by the loss, which dropped the Blue Jays to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while Lebanon Valley got its first win in three games and improved to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Etown leaped out to an 18-9 lead in the game's opening 7:02, only to see its advantage gradually evaporate over the remainder of the half. Although Lebanon Valley never tied the game or took a lead in the first half, by halftime Etown's lead stood at a precarious 35-34 after Byers hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left.
Lebanon Valley took the lead for the first time in the game 54 seconds into the second half when Dave Kasyan (Tom's River, NJ/Tom's River East) hit a three-pointer to give the Flying Dutchmen a 37-35 lead. Etown tied the score at 40-40 at 17:56 on an Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Warwick) lay-up. Dan Hogan (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) followed with a lay-up at 17:31 to give LVC a 42-40 lead. Etown tied the game again on a Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) lay-up at 16:20, and a Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) jumper gave the Blue Jays a 44-42 lead at 15:25. Steve Buzinski (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming) made a lay-up at 15:01 for LVC to tie the game again at 44-44. Etown went up 46-44 on a Daecher jumper at 11:41, and Evan Harlor (Danville, PA/Danville) made a lay-up for LVC at 11:28 to tie the score at 46-46.
Etown and Lebanon Valley traded leads in the next four minutes, only to knot the score again at 49-49 at 7:06. A pair of Dan Keane (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) free throws at 6:02 gave Etown its final lead of the game, 51-49. Kaysan tied the game at 51-51 with a layup for Lebanon Valley at 5:44, and LVC went up to stay when Harlor made one out of two free throw attempts 21 seconds later. From 4:07 to 3:09, Byers scored seven unanswered points on a three-pointer, a two-point jumper, and a pair of free throws to put LVC up 59-51. LVC went up by 10 points with 51 seconds remaining as a pair of Harlor free throws made the score 63-53, and LVC went up by 10 again with 40 seconds left as Byers hit a pair of free throws to make the score 65-55.
Etown made its last-ditch run as Connor hit a pair of three-pointers, one with 35 seconds left and another with 26 seconds remaining, to narrow the gap to 65-61. Byers made the game's final pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to put the game away, 67-61.
Connor was Etown's top scorer with 16 points, and he hit four out of seven three-point attempts. Daecher added 12 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) scored 12 points for Etown and had a team-high of four assists, and Keane added 10 points. Etown shot just 27.3% (nine-for-33) from the field in the second half after going 41.2% (14-for-34) in the first half.
Byers led Lebanon Valley in scoring with 22 points, and 11 of them came in the last 4:09. He also led the Flying Dutchmen in assists with five. Kaysan added 10 points, and he and Buzinski led LVC in rebounds with seven each. Hogan scored 13 points, and Harlor finished with 10 points.
Etown will return to action at home against Moravian Tuesday, January 27 at home in an 8:00 p.m. conference game.
