Elizabethtown Outlasts Albright, 99-87, in Overtime of Commonwealth Conference Semifinals; Blue Jays Make 44 Free Throws; Etown Will Face Widener On Road Saturday in Conference Championship
READING, Pa. --- In a game that could only be described for both teams as brutal, Elizabethtown defeated Albright 99-87 in overtime in the semifinal round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs in Reading Wednesday night. A total of 68 fouls were committed in the game's 45 minutes, and Elizabethtown shot 44-for-55 from the free throw line over the course of the game, while Albright went 19-for-37 from the foul line. With the win, Etown improves to 17-8 overall in 2003-04 and will advance to the conference championship game Saturday, when the Blue Jays will face Widener in Chester at 3:00 p.m. Albright drops to 16-9 overall with the loss and will wait to see if it receives an ECAC tournament bid next week.
For the opening four and a half minutes, neither team was able to take a lead of greater than three points. Etown took a brief 14-10 lead at 15:20 on a Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) jumper, but Albright sank two consecutive treys and took a 16-14 lead at 14:32 following a Terron Buchanon three-pointer. A Jim Barron (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) three-pointer at 12:53 returned the lead to Etown, 17-16. Connor followed with another three at 12:23 off a Barron assist, and he hit a layup at 12:02 following a steal to give the Blue Jays a 22-16 lead.
Connor hit a long jumper at 4:38 to break the stalemate and give Etown a 29-27 lead, but Albright followed with a layup seconds later to tie the game again.Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) hit a pair of free throws at 4:18 to give Etown a 31-29 advantage, and Mike Boles followed with an Albright jumper at 3:58. A Kieselowsky jumper at 3:30 gave Albright a 33-31 lead, but Daecher followed with a jumper at 3:18 to tie the game again, 33-33. At 2:39, Conrad hit one of two free throws to give the Blue Jays a 34-33 lead. Barron sank a three pointer at 2:06 to increase Etown's lead to 37-33, and he struck again with a jumper at the top of the key at 1:41 to send Etown ahead 39-33. As the first half wound down, Etown clung to a 40-35 lead.
Flynn scored first in the second half at 19:22 to extend Etown's lead to 42-35. The Etown lead stayed within a range of five to eight points for the next four minutes, until a Dan Keane (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) layup at 15:19 gave Etown its first double-digit lead of the game, 49-39. Daecher sank a layup at 14:44 to increase the Blue Jays' lead to 51-39. Trevor Deeter hit a free throw for Albright at 13:30 to cut Etown's lead back down to nine, 51-42. By 12:00, Etown's lead had been reduced to 51-46 following a pair of Kieselowsky layups. By the time eight minutes were left in the game, Etown held a 58-52 lead.
A pair of Keane free throws at 6:59 gave Etown a 61-54 lead. Daecher sank a pair of free throws at 6:40 to increase Etown's lead to 63-54. By 5:59, when Buchanon hit a layup on a fast break, Albright had cut the lead once again to five points, 63-58. Flynn hit a put-back layup at 4:52 to send Etown up 66-58, but Albright hit a three pointer at 4:39 to cut the lead back down to 66-61. Flynn and Conrad each hit a pair of free throws in the next 45 seconds to increase the Blue Jay lead to 70-61.
With 2:07 to go in the second half, Etown held a 73-64 lead after Conrad went one-for-two from the free throw line. A Deeter layup followed by an Albright steal and Buchanon dunk at 1:32 cut Etown's lead to 74-69. With 46 seconds left in the game, Etown first-year Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) hit a pair of free throws to increase the Blue Jays' lead to 76-69. Deeter hit a layup for Albright and was fouled with 38 seconds left. He made his free throw to cut Etown's lead to 76-72. Etzel went to the line following an Albright steal with 30 seconds left, and he made one of his free throws to cut the Blue Jay lead to 76-73. Conrad was sent to the line immediately afterward, and he made both free throws to give Etown a 78-73 lead with 30 seconds left.
Buchanon made a three-pointer for Albright with 23.9 seconds remaining in regulation to cut Etown's lead to 78-76. Conrad was fouled with 18.6 seconds left, and he made both free throws to give Etown an 80-76 lead. Ben Gallagher hit a three pointer for Albright with 10.6 seconds left in regulation to reduce Etown's lead to 80-79. Albright fouled Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) with 9.3 seconds left, and he missed his first free throw and made his second, giving Etown an 81-79 lead. A Lawrence put-back with 1.8 seconds left in the game tied the score at 81-81. With no scoring in the final 1.8 seconds, the game was sent into overtime.
Kieselowsky made an underhanded layup with 4:16 left in overtime to give Albright an 83-81 lead. Gallagher went to the line for Albright at 3:33 and missed both free throws. At 3:27, Adams was fouled, and he made both free throws to tie the score at 83-83. Conrad was fouled at 2:47, and he made both his free throws to give Etown an 85-83 lead. Keane hit a long jumper at 2:20 to increase Etown's lead to 87-83. An offensive foul by Kieselowsky at 2:01 caused him to foul out and gave possession back to Etown. Keane hit another long jumper following an offensive rebound at 1:20, giving Etown an 89-83 lead. Keane fouled out with 54 seconds remaining, sending Boles to the line for Albright. He missed both of his free throws, and Brian Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) got the rebound for Etown.
Adams was fouled with 50 seconds left, and he made both of his free throws to give Etown a 91-83 lead. A Connor steal and layup with 44 seconds left increased Etown's lead to 93-83, and he was fouled with 38.2 seconds left and made both his free throws to send Etown ahead 95-83. Lawrence went to the line for Albright with 32.3 seconds left, and he made both of his free throws to cut the Etown lead to 95-85. Adams was fouled again with 30.7 seconds left, and he drained both of his free throws to send Etown ahead 97-85. Conrad was fouled after grabbing a rebound with 19.4 seconds left, and he made both of his free throws to give Etown a 99-85 lead. Lawrence made a layup for Albright with 15 seconds left to cut the gap to 99-87, and the game ended with no further scoring. Etown shot 12-for-12 from the free throw line over the course of the overtime period.
Conrad finished as Etown's top scorer with 26 points, and he made 16 of 21 free throw attempts. He and Daecher each led Etown in rebounds with eight. Daecher totaled 13 points on five-for-nine shooting from the field and a three-for-four performance from the line. Connor finished the game with 15 points, and he shot six-for-12 from the field. Flynn totaled 12 points and five rebounds for Etown, and Keane scored 11 points and scored four rebounds. Barron totaled 10 points for Etown and shot two-for-three from three-point range while tossing out four assists.
Buchanon was Albright's top scorer with 25 points, and Deeter scored 14 points and led the Lions in rebounds with nine. Kieselowsky was Albright's only other double digit scorer with 10 points, and he led all players with five assists.
