ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Wilkes Wins 2003 Blue Jay Classic, 110-94 over Thomas More; Etown Wins Consolation Game, 88-78 over Adrian ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Wilkes (2-0) won the 2003 Elizabethtown Sprint Blue Jay Classic tournament title with a 110-94 win over Thomas More (1-1) in the championship game Saturday, while host Elizabethtown (1-1) downed Adrian (0-2) 88-78 in the consolation game. John Yanniello (Old Forge, PA/Old Forge) of Wilkes was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and John Sclafani (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) also made the all-tournament team from Wilkes. Thomas More placed two representatives on the all-tournament team, Chad Wachs (Park Hills, KY) and Chris Thompson (Ft. Wright, KY). Etown's Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Adrian's Brian Schaefer (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) also made the all-tournament team. In the consolation game, Etown stormed out to a 45-22 lead over Adrian by halftime and held on for the win in the second half. Conrad led the Blue Jays in scoring with just 13 points, as all 16 players on the Elizabethtown roster got in the game and scored at least two points. Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) added 12 points, and Ben Tannous (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) scored 11 points, including an eight-for-eight performance from the free throw line, as Etown's only other double-digit scorers. Jim Barron (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) had seven assists to lead the Blue Jays, and Etown's leading rebounders were Dan Keane (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) and Darryl Brown (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin), who had five each. Brown also led Etown in steals with four. Adrian's leading scorer was Schaefer with 28 points and a team high of five assists. Billy Collins (Jackson, MI/Kalamazoo CC) came off the bench to score 17 points for Adrian, and the Bulldogs' leading rebounder was Jeff Nokovich (Burton, MI/Burton Bendle) with seven. Adrian committed 24 turnovers in the game, and Elizabethtown turned the ball over 21 times. There were also 43 personal fouls in the game and a total of 54 free throws. In the championship game, Yanniello scored 24 points and had five assists to lead the Colonels past Thomas More. Mike Morgan (Taylor, PA/Riverside) added 21 points, and Sclafani had 18 points and a team high of nine assists for Wilkes. Wachs was Thomas More's leading scorer with 17 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight, and the Saints put six players in double figures in scoring. Wachs also led the saints in assists with five. Thomas More committed 30 fouls over the course of the game and had four players foul out. Wilkes committed 25 fouls and had one player foul out, and between the two teams, 66 free throws were taken in the championship game.
