ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Etown Shocks 18th-Ranked Franklin & Marshall, 91-78; Kyle Conrad Scores 35 Points ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College sent a strong message to the rest of the Mid-Atlantic Region, as well as to the nation as a whole, that it is once again a force to be reckoned with this year as it upended nationally 18th-ranked Franklin & Marshall College 91-78 Tuesday night on the Diplomats' home court. It was Etown's first win over F&M since 2001, and it improves the Blue Jays to 2-1 overall. F&M drops to 2-1 overall as well with the loss. Franklin & Marshall carried a slim 37-36 lead into halftime, and Etown erupted for 55 points in the second half, outscoring the Diplomats by 14 points after halftime. A big part of Etown's second half success was the career-best performance of junior guard Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), who totaled 35 points in the game, including 21 points in the second half alone. He joined three other Etown players in double figure scoring, including senior point guard Jim Barron (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua), who came off the bench to score 14 points, including an eight-for-nine performance from the free throw line, senior center Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Warwick), who posted a double-double by scoring 12 points and leading Etown in rebounds with 10, and sophomore point guard Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon), who pitched in 10 points and led the team with five assists. F&M shot 59.3% (16-for-27) from the field in the first half, but only 36.7% (11-for-30) from the field in the second half. Etown, by contrast, shot 43.3% (13-for-30) from the field in the first half and 56.5% (13-for-23) in the second half. The Blue Jays also sank 32 out of 37 free throws, while F&M had made just 19 out of 26 free throws. Etown also managed to out-rebound F&M 36-31. Steve Juskin led five Diplomats in double digits in scoring with 15 points, and he also had a team high of eight rebounds. Brandon Smith and Bobby Lynch each added 14 points for F&M. Duran Searles scored 13 points, and Jackiem Wright added 11 points. Etown will return to action in the York College (Pa.) Tournament Saturday, November 29. There, at 8:00 p.m., the Blue Jays will face Adrian College (Mich.) once again. Etown downed Adrian 88-78 in the consolation game of Etown's Sprint Blue Jay Classic tournament Saturday, November 22. 11/25/03 7:30 p.m. at Mayser Center, Lancaster, Pa. |
