ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Adrian Avenges Earlier Loss To Etown, Defeats Blue Jays 80-77 in First Round of York Invitational ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Adrian (MI) and Elizabethtown met for the second time of the young 2003-04 season Saturday night in the first round of the York College Invitational, and Adrian avenged its loss to the Blue Jays a week ago with an 80-77 victory over Elizabethtown this time around. Adrian, which played its first game Saturday night since Etown's Blue Jay Classic tournament last weekend, improved to 1-2 with the win, while Etown dropped to 2-2 overall with the loss. Etown jumped out to a 26-14 lead in the first fourteen minutes of the game and led 34-28 at halftime. With 9:17 left to play in the game, Etown led 63-52, but Adrian crawled back to within one point of the Blue Jays by 5:39 remaining, when a Brian Schaefer layup cut Etown's lead to 65-64. Although the score had been tied at several points in the game, Adrian never held the lead until just 3:09 remaining when a Billy Collins basket gave Adrian a 74-73 advantage. A subsequent pair of layups by Schaefer and Collins gave Adrian a 78-73 lead with 2:30 left in the game. Etown's Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) was fouled twice at 2:24 and 2:00 and made all four of his free throws to pull Etown to within one, 78-77. That was as close as Etown got, as neither team was able to make a shot from the field in the final two minutes, and the lone points scored in that span came from Adrian's Adam Novak and Schaefer, each of whom made one out of two free throw attempts at 1:49 and 0:16, respectively. For the game, Etown shot a blistering 90.3% (28-for-31) from the free throw line, while Adrian was able to convert just eight out of 20 free throw attempts. Adrian committed 21 turnovers, while Etown turned the ball over 20 times. Etown also held a 44-39 advantage in rebounding. However, Etown shot just 37.5% (24-for-64) from the field, including a 10-for-31 (32.3%) performance in the second half, and the Blue Jays made just one out of ten three point attempts for the game. Adrian, by contrast, shot 34-for-66 (51.5%) from the field for the game and 22-for-36 (61.1%) from the field in the second half. Conrad led Etown in scoring with 18 points, including a nine-for-10 performance from the charity stripe. Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) added 10 points as Etown's only other double-digit scorer. Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Lititz) was Etown's top rebounder with 11, and he scored eight points as well. Schaefer led Adrian with 25 points, and Collins came off the bench to score 20 points. Novak was Adrian's top rebounder with 10, and he added 11 points as well. Steve Thornton had 11 points and seven rebounds for Adrian. Etown will face tournament host York in the consolation game Sunday, November 30, at 1:00 p.m., while Adrian will face Neumann in the championship at 3:00 p.m. Neumann defeated York 82-80 in the opening game of the tournament Saturday night. 11/29/03 8:00 p.m. at Charles Wolf Gym, York, Pa. |
