Etown Falls to Albright 81-65 in Commonwealth Semifinal; Blue Jays Will Miss Conference Championship Game for First Time Since 2000
READING, Pa. --- For the first time since 2000, the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team will not be playing in a conference title game. The Blue Jays, seeded fourth in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, bowed out of the playoffs with an 81-65 semifinal loss on the road to top-seeded Albright College Wednesday night. The Blue Jays concluded their season with a 14-12 overall record, while Albright improved to 19-6 overall with the win and will advance to host Lebanon Valley in the conference championship game Saturday night.
A Dan Keane (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) put-back gave Etown a 10-6 lead with 13:39 left in the first half, and an Albright layup at 13:21 triggered the game's first time-out with the Blue Jays holding a 10-8 advantage. With 10:28 left in the first half, Albright's Greg Conroy (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was fouled and made one of his free throws to tie the game 12-12. An Andy Winebrenner (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield) three-pointer at 9:45 gave Albright a 15-12 lead. Trevor Deeter (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) was fouled at 8:57 and made both of his free throws to put Albright up 17-12.
A Winebrenner trey at 7:55 gave Albright a 20-12 lead, and he followed with another three at 7:38 to bump Albright's advantage to 23-12, causing Etown to call a time out with 7:09 left in the first half. The bleeding stopped for the Blue Jays at 6:56 when Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) was fouled and made both of his free throws to cut the gap to 23-14. With 4:51 left in the half, however, Albright led 29-16.
A Conrad three-pointer at 2:08 cut Albright's lead to 36-26, and a Brian Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) three at 1:50 cut Albright's lead to 36-29. By halftime, Albright led 40-33. Winebrenner tallied 17 points for Albright in the first half alone on a 6-for-6 performance from the field and a 5-for-5 effort from three-point range. Conrad totaled 14 Etown first half points, going 3-for-8 from the field, 2-for-4 from three-point range, and 6-for-7 from the free throw line.
Etown scored first in the second half as Schreiber hit a three-pointer at 18:28 to cut Albright's lead to 40-36. Albright called a timeout at 15:52 with a 46-42 lead following a Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) layup for Etown. Andrew Flynn (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West) made a layup for Etown at 15:40 to cut Albright's lead to 46-44. Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) tied the game 46-46 at 15:08 with a layup for Etown.
Shane Harvey (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) gave Albright a 48-46 lead with a layup at 14:45. Conroy hit a three for Albright at 14:12 to give the Lions a 51-46 lead. At 12:13, Elu Lawrence (Franklin, PA/Franklin) and made both of his free throws to give Albright a 53-46 lead. At 11:48, Lawrence was fouled again and made one of his free throws to increase Albright's lead to 54-46.
At 10:33, Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) hit a three-pointer to cut an Albright lead that had grown to nine points to 57-51. Winebrenner hit his sixth three-pointer for Albright at 9:14 to give the Lions a 64-53 lead, Albright's first double digit lead of the second half. A Deeter layup at 7:54 gave Albright a 67-53 advantage, its widest of the game at that point. By 6:27 left, Albright's lead had stretched to 15 points, 70-55.
With 3:53 left in the game, Albright called a timeout with a 73-61 lead. At 3:06, a Lawrence three-pointer with four seconds left on the shot clock gave Albright a 78-61 lead. Albright went up 81-61 at 1:57 on a Deeter layup. By the end of the game, the score stood at 81-65.
Conrad led the Blue Jays in points with 16, rebounds with eight, and steals with two. He finished his career with 1,157 points, tying him for 21st place on Etown's all-time scoring list with Leon Carswell '80. Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Schreiber each tallied eight points for Etown from off the bench. 27 of
Etown's 65 points came from off the bench.
