ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Outlasts Juniata 86-79 for First Conference Win; Blue Jay Head Coach Bob Schlosser One Win Away From 250 ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- Elizabethtown outlasted multiple Juniata rallies en route to its first Commonwealth Conference win of the 2005-06 season, 86-79 over the visiting Eagles. The win improves Etown to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while Juniata drops to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The victory was also the 249th of Elizabethtown head coach Bob Schlosser’s collegiate coaching career. The Blue Jays stormed out to a 13-1 lead over Juniata in the game’s opening minutes, but Juniata managed to narrow the gap to 32-28 by halftime as Aaron Chamberlain (Wood, PA/Tussey Mountain) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the Eagles. The second half saw Etown pull out to an 11 point lead within the first four minutes, but Juniata again narrowed the gap, this time to 53-50 by 9:41 left in the game. That was as close as Juniata would get, as Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) hit a three-pointer 18 seconds later to put Etown up by six. By the time 8:08 was left in the game, Etown held a 12 point lead, 63-51. Once again, Juniata clawed back to within three points when a Chamberlain layup with 4:18 left in the game narrowed Etown’s lead to 65-62. Etown’s Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) hit a three-pointer with 4:01 left to put Etown up 68-62, but Juniata’s Travis Boyd (Barree, PA/Juniata Valley) responded with a three-pointer of his own 10 seconds later to cut the gap to 68-65. Etown began to pull away again, and by the time 2:15 was left, the Blue Jays had an eight point lead. Etown led by 10 points with seven seconds left in the game, and a Tommy McConnell (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) three pointer for the Eagles with just three seconds on the clock made the final score 86-79 in Etown’s favor. Juniata out-rebounded Etown 41-33, but Juniata committed 22 turnovers against 10 for Etown. The Blue Jays held a 16-7 advantage in steals over the game. Etown made 18 of 22 (81.8%) free throw attempts, while Juniata converted 22 of 34 (64.7%) from the line. Elizabethtown had six players score nine points or more, and four Blue Jays had three or more assists. Brizek led Etown’s scorers with 19 points, and he led the Blue Jays in assists with five and in steals with five. Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/ Lebanon) scored 12 points, had four assists and three steals for Etown, and Brian Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) scored 13 points and led Etown in rebounds with seven. Brad Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) scored 17 points and had five rebounds for the Blue Jays while shooting 8-for-12 from the field. Schatzmann added nine points, all in the second half off a total of six three-point attempts, from off the bench, and Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored nine points and had three assists. Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) came off the bench to tally four assists and three points in just 10 minutes for Etown. Chamberlain was Juniata’s top scorer with 23 from off the bench. Boyd added 16 points, and McConnell scored 10. Chris Jasiota (Oil City, PA/Oil City) was Juniata’s top rebounder with 11, and he scored 13 points. Brian Cannon (Fallston, MD/Fallston) added 11 points and five rebounds for the Eagles. Elizabethtown will try to even its Commonwealth Conference record, as well as try for coach Schlosser’s 250th career win, when it hosts Lebanon Valley College in a 4:00 p.m. game Saturday, January 14.
