ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Defeats Rutgers-Newark 87-73 on First Day of Catholic University Classic WASHINGTON , D.C. --- Elizabethtown College defeated Rutgers-Newark 87-73 on the first day of the Catholic University of America Classic Saturday to advance to Sunday’s 4:00 p.m. final against Catholic and improve to 6-5 overall. The game was only the second loss of the season for Rutgers-Newark, which drops to 9-2 overall. The lead changed hands several times early in the first half, until Elizabethtown went on a 20-8 run to pull ahead 36-22. By halftime, the Blue Jays held a 51-37 lead. Rutgers-Newark held a 45-38 advantage in rebounding, but shot just 36.4% (24-for-66) from the field, while Elizabethtown went 48.4% (30-for-62) from the field.
Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 23 points, 20 of which came in the first half. He shot 7-for-13 from the field, 6-for-10 from three-point range and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Kieres also led the Blue Jays in steals with four. Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) led Elizabethtown in rebounds with seven, and he scored 13 points. Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) led Elizabethtown in assists with 10 and added nine points, and Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) added 11 points. Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds for Elizabethtown. Chadd Barnes led Rutgers-Newark in points with 23, and David Cherry added 13 points. Philippe Slater and Afolabi Ajumobi each scored 12 points for Rutgers-Newark, and Ajumobi and Derryck Alexander each led the team in rebounds with nine apiece. At Washington, DC |
