Elizabethtown Falls to Widener, 70-65
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College suffered its sixth consecutive loss Wednesday night, falling at home to Commonwealth Conference rival Widener University 70-65 to drop to 6-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference. Each of the Blue Jays last five losses have been decided by margins of less than ten points. Widener, a 2006 NCAA Division III tournament “Sweet Sixteen” participant and last year’s Commonwealth runner-up, improved to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in the conference with the victory.
Elizabethtown out-rebounded Widener 38-32, and Widener had 18 turnovers against 15 for Etown. Widener shot 50.9% (27-for-53) from the field, while Elizabethtown went 38.8% (26-for-67) from the field. The Pride never led by more than 10 points the entire game, and Widener held a 40-36 lead at halftime.
Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) was Elizabethtown’s leading scorer and rebounder with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 6-for-13 from the field and 2-for-5 from three-point range. Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) added 14 points and seven rebounds for Etown. Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) also scored 14 points for the Blue Jays, and Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) added nine points.
Essien Ford (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) led Widener in scoring with 20 points and in rebounds with seven. Malcolm Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Pride, and Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) scored 13 points from off the bench. He shot 5-for-5 from the field.
Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, January 27 against Albright College in an 8:00 p.m. game.
