ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Downs PSU-Harrisburg 84-23, #5 Ohio Northern Beats DeSales 74-57, on First Day of Elizabethtown Days Inn East Blue Jay Classic ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- Nationally fifth-ranked Ohio Northern University and tournament host Elizabethtown College both posted season-opening first round wins in the Elizabethtown Days Inn East Blue Jay Classic Friday night. Ohio Northern (1-0) defeated DeSales University (0-1) by a 74-57 margin in the first game of the night, and Elizabethtown (1-0) won 84-23 over Penn State-Harrisburg (0-2) in the nightcap. With the wins, Elizabethtown and Ohio Northern will face one another in the tournament’s championship game at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, while DeSales and Penn State-Harrisburg will square off in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be held at Elizabethtown College’s Thompson Gymnasium. In the opener, DeSales stuck close to nationally ranked ONU for much of the game, as Ohio Northern clung to a 34-30 lead at halftime and only went up by 10 points for the first time with 10:26 left in the second half. Ohio Northern out-rebounded DeSales 40-22 over the course of the game. Greg Badenhop (Liberty Center, OH) led Ohio Northern in scoring with 21 points and shot 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Bart Hostetler (Strasburg, OH/Strasburg-Franklin) came off the bench to lead ONU in rebounds with nine and score 15 points while going 5-for-5 from the field. Jake Cannan (Dublin, OH/Coffman) added 10 points and six rebounds for the winning Polar Bears. Steve Kriczky (Birdsboro, PA/Daniel Boone) led DeSales in scoring with 20 points as he shot 9-for-13 from the field. Phil Strickler (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser) led the Bulldogs in rebounds with five and scored 14 points. In the second game, Elizabethtown cruised to its win, holding a 39-12 advantage by halftime. Penn State-Harrisburg committed 29 turnovers, and Elizabethtown totaled 19 steals. The Blue Jays also out rebounded Penn State-Harrisburg 47-31, and Elizabethtown shot 51.5% (35-for-69) from the field while the Nittany Lions shot just 15.8% (6-for-39) from the field and 0-for-11 from three-point range. Nick Kennedy (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing Area) came off the bench to lead Elizabethtown in scoring with 15 points and pull down eight rebounds in 13 minutes. Blue Jay first-year student Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) came off the bench to tally a double-double in his first collegiate game, leading the team in rebounds with 11 and scoring 11 points in 12 minutes of playing time. Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) scored 14 points for Elizabethown, and Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area) totaled 13 points for the Blue Jays as he shot 6-for-7 from the field.
