Neumann Nips Elizabethtown 72-69  

ELIZABETHTOWN , Pa. --- Neumann College scraped past Elizabethtown College with a 72-69 win at Etown’s Thompson Gymansium Sunday evening. Elizabethtown drops to 1-3 overall with the loss, while Neumann improves to 3-1 overall with the win, its first ever against the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown stormed out to a 21-3 lead in the first 11:51 of the game and held a 37-28 advantage at halftime. Neumann took the lead for the first time, 47-46, with 13:01 left in the second half. By the time eight minutes were left, Elizabethtown held a 56-51 advantage. Neumann pulled ahead again, 59-58, with 4:29 left in the game, and the score was tied 64-64 with 1:52 left.

With 1:24 remaining, Neumann took the lead for good, 66-64. The Knights were up 70-64 with 45 seconds left, and Elizabethtown cut the gap to 71-69 with five seconds remaining. D.J. Fritz (Cheltenham, MD/MacNamara) hit one out of two free throws for Neumann with three seconds left to extend the Knights’ lead to 72-69 and give Elizabethtown one more offensive opportunity. The Blue Jays brought the ball down court, and Etown’s Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area) fired up a three-pointer. He made the shot, but the shot did not count as it was taken a fraction of a second after time expired.

Elizabethtown committed 32 fouls, including 18 in the first half, and Neumann went 27-for-36 (75.0%) from the free throw line. Elizabethtown made 12 out of its 20 (60%) free throws as Neumann committed 21 fouls.

Kieres led Elizabethtown in scoring with 13 points and in steals with four. Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds for Etown, and Michael Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/ equea Valley) and Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) each had 10 points. Schatzmann led the Blue Jays in rebounds with eight.

Fritz led Neumann in scoring with 19 points and in rebounds with seven. Mike Hitchens (Ardsley, PA/Abington) scored 14 points for Neumann from off the bench, and Derahn Patrick (Chester, PA/Chester) added 12 points for the Knights.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Wednesday, November 29 against Susquehanna University in the Blue Jays’ first Commonwealth Conference game of the season at 8:00 p.m.
