Lebanon Valley Sends Elizabethtown to 70-63 Defeat
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Kyle Enoch scored a game-high 21 points, including a go-ahed three-pointer with 4:10 remaining, as Lebanon Valley College defeated Elizabethtown College 70-63 in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Dan Hodge added 14 points and six rebounds while Peter Ruth came off the bench to tally 10 points and a team-high nine boards for the Flying Dutchmen (8-11 overall, 2-2 Commonwealth).
Senior Mike Schatzmann (Paradise, PA/Pequea Valley) paced the Blue Jays (14-4 overall, 1-3 Commonwealth) with 15 points, but Elizabethtown shot just 39.7 percent (23-for-58) from the field in the game in failing to reach the 70-point mark for just the second time this season.
After senior Jordan Dirago (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill) hit two foul shots to give the Blue Jays their final lead of the day at 57-56 with 4:35 remaining, Enoch hit a three-pointer to trigger an 11-2 Dutchmen run over the next four minutes.
Trailing 67-59 with 30 seconds left, the Blue Jays tallied four straight points to pull within 67-63 with 16 seconds to go, but Lebanon Valley hit three foul shots in the final 10 seconds to deny a potential Elizabethtown comeback.
Elizabethtown led by as many as seven points in the first half at 22-15 with 4:39 left, but a 10-3 run pushed Lebanon Valley to the locker room with a 28-25 lead. Hodge paced the Dutchmen with eight points in the opening half while sophomore Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) scored a team-high eight points for the Blue Jays.
Lebanon Valley took its biggest lead at the time of 37-32 on a basket by Enoch with 15:52 left, but the Blue Jays surged back on top via an 8-1 run to take a 40-38 lead with 11:56 to go. The teams were tied nine times in the second half and swapped the lead a total of 21 times in the game.
Church finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Elizabethtown, while senior Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) tallied 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Overall, the Dutchmen shot 20-for-31 (64.5 percent) at the foul line while the Blue Jays hit on 13-of-22 attempts (59.1 percent). Lebanon Valley held a 41-36 edge in rebounding and committed 19 turnovers to Elizabethtown's 16.
