ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL
JUNIATA SPRINGS ANOTHER UPSET, HANDS BLUE JAYS 71-65 LOSS
HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Tim Lonesky scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds to lead Juniata past Elizabethtown, 71-65, in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Tuesday.
Pat Sowerby added 14 points, including four three-pointers, and Nathan Hager chipped in with ten points as the Eagles (7-16, 4-10) avenged a 108-54 loss at Etown on January 20.
Ryan Billet scored 16 points to lead the Blue Jays (14-9, 8-5), who must win on Saturday at Moravian to have a chance of hosting a first-round MAC playoff game. Etown clinched a playoff berth by defeating Albright on Saturday and could still finish anywhere from second to fourth place in the Commonwealth League.
After an even first half that saw Juniata go ahead 34-33, Dan Andros hit the first bucket of the half to give Etown its last lead of the game. Mike Trestka converted one of two free throws and Hagar followed with a lay-in to give the hosts a 37-35 lead with 15:27 remaining.
The two teams alternated baskets before Sowerby hit a three-pointers and Lonesky scored on a layup to put Juniata up 46-39 with 12:25 left in the game. Adam Weber pulled the Jays within four with his lone three-pointer of the contest, but Dustin Ryan answered with a trey of his own and Lonesky followed with a lay-in to give Juniata a 51-42 cushion.
Etown chipped away in the game's final ten minutes, getting as close as 66-63 when Mark Sweet tapped in a missed shot with 45 seconds remaining. Juniata, however, converted 5-of-6 free throws in the game's final moments to seal the upset.
A.J. Beamer and Brad Karli were next on the Blue Jays' scoring list with 10 points apiece. Beamer led Etown with seven rebounds.
Etown wraps up its regular season schedule on Saturday, February 21 at Moravian College. Game time is 8 p.m. The Blue Jays won the previous meeting between the teams, 76-70, on January 24 at Thompson Gym.
