UNRUH'S LAST-SECOND THREE GIVES ETOWN 67-65 WIN OVER GETTYSBURG; BLUE JAYS WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Ross Unruh (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game with 0.8 seconds remaining to lift Elizabethtown over Gettysburg, 67-65, in non-league action on Tuesday. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 8-1 on the season.
Chris Sattele (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) scored a season-high 17 points while Unruh added a career-best 14 points to extend Etown's winning streak to seven games, the program's best stretch since a seven-game streak in 1992-93. Kevin Cristofoletti (Kendall Park, N.J./Notre Dame) chipped in with 12 points for the Blue Jays while A.J. Beamer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) scored seven points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds.
Greg Schreiber led three players in double figures with 21 points for Gettysburg (6-5), which lost for the third straight time. Bill Davidson was next for the Bullets with 17 points while Kevin Carroll chipped in with ten.
Gettysburg trailed 64-62 in the game's final minute until Davidson drilled a three-pointer with 28.3 second left to give the Bullets a one-point edge.
With the shot clock off, Adam Weber (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain) missed on a three-pointer of his own, but Matt Nikoloff (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) pulled in the offense rebound to give Etown another chance. Seconds later Beamer found Unruh behind the arc and the sophomore drilled his fourth trey of the game to give the Blue Jays a 67-65 lead with 0.8 seconds remaining. Following a Bullet timeout, Weber knocked down Gettysburg's last-ditch, full-court pass to seal the win.
Early on, the Blue Jays didn't look like a team on a six-game roll. A 10-0 Bullet run late in the first half turned a one-point game into a 34-23 Gettysburg lead with 2:30 remaining before halftime.
Etown trailed 38-29 at the half, but pulled within 45-43 following a pair of Unruh three-pointers with 12:50 left. The Bullets, however, stalled the Jays' momentum with a timeout and then rattled off the next six points on a jumper from Carroll and two baskets by Mike Monroe to push their advantage to 51-44 with 8:01 left in regulation.
Two free throws from Beamer and five points from Cristofoletti tied the game at 51 before the teams went back-and-forth into the game's final seconds.
Gettysburg shot 23-for-50 (46.0 percent) from the field for the game while holding Etown to 25-for-65 (36.7 percent) shooting on the night.
