ETOWN WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT WITH 73-70 UPSET OF MILLERSVILLE; BEAMER LEADS THE WAY WITH CAREER-BEST 21 POINTS
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A.J. Beamer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) scored a career-high 21 points and added ten rebounds and eight assists to lead Elizabethtown to a 73-70 upset win over Division II Millersville on Thursday at Thompson Gymnasium. With the victory, the Blue Jays improved to 7-1 on the season and ran their winning streak to six games.
Adam Weber (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain) scored 14 points and Mark Sweet (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) added eight points and ten rebounds for Etown, which built a 69-62 lead with 1:01 remaining and held on for the win when Millersville's Jamal Palmer missed a three-pointer in the game's final seconds. Palmer led the way with 22 points for the Marauders, who fell to 7-2 on the season and saw their own winning streak snapped at seven games.
The win was the first for Etown over Millersville in their last six meetings and the first since an 88-79 win at the Franklin & Marshall Sponaugle Tournament on November 18, 1983. The Jays and Marauders were squaring off for the first time since a 92-81 Millersville victory on November 21, 1986.
With 9:52 left in regulation, Millersville took its last lead of the game when Matt Kale (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) drained his lone three-pointer of the night to make it 50-49. Etown followed with an 8-0 run to take a seven-point lead, a margin they held at 69-62 entering the game's final minute.
Jason Seitz (Wrightsville, Pa./Eastern York) knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the night to make it 69-65 Etown, but Weber answered with a pair of free throws to keep the lead at six. Millersville pulled within 71-70 on a put-back from Palmer and three-pointer from Seitz, but Beamer kept the Marauders at arm's length with two clutch charity tosses.
With 11.4 seconds remaining, Millersville had a chance to send the game into overtime, but could manage only a three-point miss as the buzzer sounded.
Seitz finished with 18 points for Millersville, including a team-best five three-pointers. The Marauders shot just 25-for-65 (38.5 percent) from the field and 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) from three-point range.
Ryan Renfrow (Norrisville, Md./North Harford) set career-highs with eight points and seven rebounds in 21 strong minutes off the Etown bench.
