ETOWN DEFEATS JUNIATA, 81-66, MAKES MAC PLAYOFFS

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- With its season on the line, Elizabethtown had to win Saturday to have a shot at making the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs. The Blue Jays accomplished this objective with an 81-66 home win over Juniata early Saturday evening, and Elizabethtown closed out its regular season with a 13-11 overall record and a 6-8 record in the MAC Commonwealth.

Then the waiting began. In order for the Blue Jays to make the playoffs, Messiah had to defeat Moravian, and Albright had to win against Susquehanna Saturday. Messiah won, and Albright's squeaked past Susquehanna 71-69 Saturday night, sending Elizabethtown into the MAC playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.

Senior Mark Sweet (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville) made his final regular-season game in Etown's Thompson Gymnasium a memorable one as he scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. His point total Saturday eclipsed his previous career best by seven, and he shot 12 for 16 from the field. Bob Porambo (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) added 22 points for the Blue Jays, and Brian Loftus (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) scored 13.

Brian Dietrich scored 15 points for Juniata (3-21 overall, 1-13 MAC Commonwealth), and Tim Lonesky had a team-high six rebounds for the Eagles.

Etown will play at Scranton against the Royals in the first round of the MAC playoffs Tuesday, February 22. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
