15th-Ranked Denison Downs Etown, 14-1

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- In what was probably the team's toughest match-up of the year, Elizabethtown took on the nation's 15th-ranked Denison University (OH) Sunday and fell to the visiting Big Red, 14-1. Etown drops to 5-7 overall with the loss, while Denison's record improves to 9-2.

After five minutes of scoreless play, Andy MacIlwaine (Charlottesville, VA/St. Annes-Belfield School) scored the first Denison goal at 9:33 in the first quarter. Kevin Sullivan (Timonium, MD/Boy's Latin School) scored for Denison just 23 seconds later to send the Big Red ahead 2-0.

Etown struck back with what turned out to be its only goal of the game with 6:00 remaining in the first quarter when Wes Kinney (Lexington, KY/Medfield) netted a Ryan Smetana (Conowingo, MD/John Carroll) pass to cut Denison's lead to 2-1. From there, Denison notched three more goals to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Denison went on to score three goals in each of the three remaining quarters to seal the win.

Sullivan was Denison's leading goal scorer with four. Kip Hale (Salida, CO/Pomfret School, CT) and Ryan Berger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) led the Big Red with two assists each. Also, local native Greg Mavraganis (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) scored a goal and tallied an assist for Denison.

Denison goaltenders Peter Royer (Avon, CT/Westminster School) and Andrew Freeman (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy) needed to make only eight saves as Denison out-shot Elizabethtown 39-14 on the day. Denison also had 21 successful clears against just 11 for Etown, and the Big Red won 13 of 20 face-offs.

Elizabethtown returns to action Wednesday, April 24 on the road against Goucher. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
